Trainees are provided with information on the hazards associated with such incidents and with methods and information on how to remain safe while in areas affected by the incident. The All Hazards Safety portion of the training focuses on dangers such as hurricanes, terrorist attacks, pandemic disease outbreaks and riots that news gatherers can face as part of doing their job. The training consists of two primary categories: Electronic News Gathering Safety, and All Hazards Safety. Trainees are taught a level of situational awareness appropriate to the type of work they are performing as part of the news gathering process. This Electronic News Gathering (ENG) safety training equips news gathering personnel with the knowledge and skills to report on both man-made and natural disasters in as safe a manner as possible in other words “How to get the story and stay safe”. It has produced both valuable safety improvements and impressive cost savings.Īll Hazards developed and has been delivering a unique training program for a major US television news agency since 2006.
Over 2,000 terminal employees have been trained each year in the program. We developed this program from the ground up, including identifying the equipment needed, design of spill carts used to house equipment, step-by-step response, dress-out and decontamination procedures and spill response documentation. When appropriate, these teams would don PPE, stop the spill, clean up any released material and properly dispose of the waste. Hands-on drills were an important part of this program: dock workers were formed into Spill Teams and trained to determine the size and scope of a spill to ensure it was within their capabilities to respond. Trainees were instructed in the use of personal protective equipment, spill response techniques and other topics needed to form knowledgeable and well-equipped response teams. An important aspect of the training was incident prevention and hazard identification: terminal dock workers were trained to identify and respond to releases of hazardous materials so as to stop the spill or invoke the appropriate emergency response procedure. The purpose was to reduce the amount of time a hazardous spill affects terminal operations and eliminate the need for professional cleanup contractors. Managers were provided with incident command training developed around the company’s own emergency operations plan.
The training was delivered to supervisors, dock workers, garage personnel and dispatchers at 47 US terminals in 29 states. All Hazards developed a customized training program for emergency response to hazardous materials spills for a national over-the-road freight hauler.
